Social Security benefits in Michigan

Varies

Is Social Security Taxed in Michigan?

Short answer: No. Michigan deducts all Social Security income included in federal AGI. For 2026 through 2028, PA 24 of 2025 also lets taxpayers born after 1952 who are 67 or older claim both the Social Security deduction and the full senior standard deduction, instead of having the standard deduction reduced by their Social Security.

Federally, up to 85% of benefits can be taxable depending on your combined income (IRS Pub 915); that part doesn't change by state.

Records to keep: Keep your state return, W-2s and 1099s (1099-R, SSA-1099), and any state credit worksheets. Check your state revenue department's current-year instructions before you file.
