Renters credit in Michigan

Can Renters Get a Tax Break in Michigan?
Short answer: Yes: Michigan offers the Homestead Property Tax Credit. Refundable credit for renters and homeowners where 23% of rent paid generally counts as property tax; up to $1,900 for 2025, claimed on Form MI-1040CR. Michigan resident at least six months; must have a lease or rental agreement; total household resources of $71,500 or less for 2025, with the credit phasing down above $62,500.
University-owned housing doesn't qualify. Renters 65+ can use an alternate calculation (Worksheet 5) that may give a larger credit, and claims can be filed up to four years back. Rent on your own home isn't deductible on your federal return; the exceptions are a home office used for your business or renting out part of the place you rent.
Records to keep: Keep your lease, rent receipts or a landlord rent certificate, and proof of household income. Check your state's current-year form and deadline before you apply.
