Can Renters Get a Tax Break in Vermont?

Short answer: Yes: Vermont offers the Renter Credit. Refundable credit for renters of any age, equal to 10% of HUD fair market rent for a unit of your household size in your county (reduced at higher incomes); claimed on Form RCC-146. Vermont domicile all year; rented in Vermont at least six months; cannot be claimed as a dependent; household income under county- and household-size limits based on 65% of area median income.

The claim for 2025 rent is due October 15, 2026. You need your unit's School Property Account Number (SPAN), and your landlord must file a landlord certificate with the state. Rent on your own home isn't deductible on your federal return; the exceptions are a home office used for your business or renting out part of the place you rent.

Records to keep: Keep your lease, rent receipts or a landlord rent certificate, and proof of household income. Check your state's current-year form and deadline before you apply.
