Renters credit in South Dakota

Varies

Can Renters Get a Tax Break in South Dakota?

Short answer: No: South Dakota doesn't offer a renter's credit or rent rebate. South Dakota has no state income tax and no renter-specific credit or rebate. Seniors 65+ and people with disabilities, including renters, can apply for a yearly sales tax refund (2026 application: income of $17,215 or less living alone, or $23,265 or less for a household; apply May 1 through July 1). With no income tax to deduct, renters who itemize federally can deduct sales tax instead (4.2% state rate, about 6.11% with local).

Rent on your own home isn't deductible on your federal return; the exceptions are a home office used for your business or renting out part of the place you rent.

Records to keep: Keep your lease, rent receipts or a landlord rent certificate, and proof of household income. Check your state's current-year form and deadline before you apply.
