Renters credit in Rhode Island

Varies

Can Renters Get a Tax Break in Rhode Island?

Short answer: Yes: Rhode Island offers the Property Tax Relief Credit (RI-1040H). Refundable credit for older and disabled renters where 20% of rent counts as property tax, up to $700 (2025); claimed on Form RI-1040H, either with the RI-1040 or on its own. Age 65+ and/or disabled; Rhode Island resident all year; household income of $40,730 or less; must be current on rent.

Attach a copy of your lease or three rent receipts. RI-1040H is due April 15 even if you get an extension for your income tax return, and rent paid with public assistance is excluded. Rent on your own home isn't deductible on your federal return; the exceptions are a home office used for your business or renting out part of the place you rent.

Records to keep: Keep your lease, rent receipts or a landlord rent certificate, and proof of household income. Check your state's current-year form and deadline before you apply.
