Renters credit in North Carolina

Varies

Can Renters Get a Tax Break in North Carolina?

Short answer: No: North Carolina doesn't offer a renter's credit or rent rebate. North Carolina has no state tax credit, deduction, or rebate specifically for renters. North Carolina's homestead property tax relief programs (the elderly/disabled exclusion and the circuit breaker deferral) are limited to homeowners who live in their homes. Renters who itemize federally can deduct sales tax (4.75% state rate, about 7.1% with local) or North Carolina income tax, whichever is bigger.

Rent on your own home isn't deductible on your federal return; the exceptions are a home office used for your business or renting out part of the place you rent.

Records to keep: Keep your lease, rent receipts or a landlord rent certificate, and proof of household income. Check your state's current-year form and deadline before you apply.
